Kyle Baldwin is an in-demand conductor and percussionist in the San Francisco
Bay Area. Kyle serves as Assistant Conductor for the Redwood Symphony in Redwood
City, CA, Director of the
Rainbow Chamber Players, and is
the founder of the publishing company
Piccola Musica, which was originally created to
increase accessibility to conducting opportunities through custom arrangements.
Since inception, these arrangements have
been used domestically and internationally in conducting workshops. Kyle
previously served as Assistant Conductor for the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony. In
these artistic positions and through his education work, Kyle is dedicated to
building community by recognizing diversity, fostering inclusion, and promoting
excellence.
Kyle has a diverse background in conducting that spans symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, opera, chamber music, and dance, allowing him to create exciting and meaningful musical experiences. Attending international and domestic conducting seminars, Kyle has had the opportunity to work with leading conducting educators including Paul Vermel, Peter Jaffe, Maurice Peress, and Neil Thomson. In academic settings, he studied conducting with Cyrus Ginwala, Wayne Gorder, Christopher James Lees, and Frank Wiley.
Kyle strives to work with living composers and has worked with distinguished composers such as Libby Larsen, Samuel Jones, Victoria Bond, David Conte, Byron Adams, and Avner Dorman. He conducted the music of Dennis Tobenski with Tobenski singing and played percussion in the West coast premiere of Tobenski’s piece “Only Air”. Kyle was instrumental in preparing the world premieres of Andrew Lippa’s I Am Harvey Milk and June Bonacich’s Concerto for String Trio, written for the Little Stars Trio. Recently Kyle conducted the West coast premiere of Rain Worthington’s “Shredding Glass” and Timo Andres' “re-composition” of Mozart’s “Coronation” Concerto (Piano Concerto No. 26 in D Major, K. 537).
In addition to his artistic and educational positions, Kyle previously served as Administrative Director for Young Chamber Musicians and Assistant to the Director for the Morrison Chamber Music Center.
When not poring over his musical work, Kyle enjoys the problem solving involved with computer programming and the (usually) relaxing craftsmanship of bookbinding. During COVID shutdowns, he felt it was necessary (it was not) to create an introductory website and set of videos for people wanting to learn more about 32-bit ARM assembly. Kyle is always expanding his abilities and is currently in pursuit of becoming a polyglot. Kyle currently lives in San Francisco with his partner and cat, ë´„ (Bom).
